Dental Implants

When patients are missing a tooth, the surrounding ones tend to shift toward the available space, affecting the alignment of their bite. Additionally, tooth loss fosters jawbone density loss, which can affect the stability of their remaining healthy teeth and even lead to further oral problems. Getting a prompt restoration with our dental implants is key to preventing that.

With our implants at Dentistry at Kennestone, you can restore the health of your smile in a secure, efficient, and quick manner.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Implants are tiny titanium posts placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth.

Small posts are then attached to the implant, which protrudes through the gums. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth. A natural-looking customized dental crown is then attached.

This allows individuals who have lost teeth to regain the ability to eat virtually anything and smile confidently, knowing that teeth appear natural. Moreover, dental implants can help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.

Can Anyone Get Dental Implants?

Anyone with good oral health can enjoy the benefits of dental implants. Because this procedure involves the surgical insertion of titanium in the jawbone—with a consequential long-healing period to ensure osseointegration—patients must be in a state to heal efficiently.

Therefore, if you experience extensive tooth decay or gum disease, we must treat these conditions before considering dental implants. Another limiting factor can be jawbone density. Lack of bone density may create an environment in which the titanium post doesn’t have enough foundation to integrate.

To ensure this isn’t your case and assess the health of your smile, we will ask that you undergo a dental/radiographic examination and health history if you feel implant dentistry is your choice.

We will explain the treatment and provide proper care indications during these consultation visits. Dr. Foxhall, or an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon referred to by our practice, will address your specific needs and considerations.

We value your questions and concerns, and our team will work closely with you to help make your procedure a success.

How’s the Dental Implant Procedure?

For most patients, dental implant placement involves two surgical procedures.

First, dental implants are placed within the jawbone. For the first three to six months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums, gradually bonding with the jawbone.

You should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet during this time. At the same time, your restorative dentist will work on the dental crown, final bridgework, or denture, which will ultimately improve both function and aesthetics.

The second phase begins after the dental implant has bonded to the jawbone. The surgeon uncovers the implants and attaches a small healing collar. Then, posts or attachments can be connected to the implants, over which the replacement teeth will lie.

The entire procedure usually takes six to eight months, but most patients do not experience any disruption in their daily life.

Surgical Advances in Dental Implants

Using the most recent advances in dental implant technology, Dr. Foxhall is able to place single-stage implants. These implants do not require a second procedure to uncover them, but they do require a minimum of six weeks of healing time before artificial teeth are placed.

There are even situations where the implant can be placed at the same time as the tooth extraction, further minimizing the number of surgical procedures.

Dental implant placement is a team effort between a periodontist and a restorative dentist. Dr. Foxhall performs the actual implant surgery, initial tooth extractions, and bone grafting, if necessary, while the restorative dentist fits and makes the permanent prosthesis. Your dentist will also make any temporary prosthesis needed during the implant process.
